Blizzard kills games when they’re not good enough, Metallica cuts many of songs for every track that makes it on an album and in this interview, Ira Glass says most of his stuff is crap.

This is true in game development as well. Many interfaces, control schemes, resource models, abilities, etc. must be tried and (most likely) thrown out in order to put together a great game.
